Direct access to Coed y Brenin via a quiet country lane just 200 yards from the farm gate.
Cae Gwyn ('White Field') is a sheep farm in the south of Snowdonia National Park with a farming history dating back over 200 years. Even to this day very little has changed over the centuries. The only differences perhaps are that today we run the 140 acre hill farm., and that Cae Gwyn now welcomes you to experience a close to nature holiday. You will see our pet Valais Blacknose cross sheep together with our flock of Welsh sheep. For those guests interested in 'Green' principles, we have a 4KW solar panel system, and will soon be using a wood pellet biomass boiler for heating and hot water.
We offer bed and breakfast, camping, and camping barn facilities in an unspoilt natural environment. Our aim is to offer flexible holiday opportunities to suit everyone, and whether you are here to enjoy mountain-biking, walking, climbing, fishing, canoeing, reading novels, or simply just for the breath of fresh air, we hope you will be able to find your own ideal holiday at Cae Gwyn.
Our guests are invited to walk freely around the 140
acre farm and nature reserve. The Nature
reserve at Cae Gwyn is a designated SSSI (Site of Special
Scientific Interest) for its rare flora, fauna, and other aquatic life,
where you may find a hidden picnic spot next to the river on
moss-covered rocks. Our streams and the SAC (Special Area of
Conservation) designated river 'Afon Eden' is not only a home to one of
the last breeding colonies of fresh water pearl mussels in Wales, but
also to Atlantic salmon, otters, rainbow & brown trout and
floating water-plantain. Being close to mountains, lakes, rivers and
the sea, Cae Gwyn offers many possibilities for outdoor activities, the
farm is an excellent base for mountain-biking, walking, fishing and
canoeing.
For mountain
bikers, we offer bike-friendly accommodation and
lock-up/bike-wash facilities. As Cae Gwyn's southern land borders the
Coed y Brenin forest, you can leave your car on the farm and ride out
for the day, straight from the gate either 1 mile down the main road or
take the first left up a quiet country lane to the MBR trail. A short
drive away (30 minutes to 1 hour) takes you to other popular mountain
bike trails, including Gwydyr Forest in Betws y Coed, Nant-yr-Arian
just inland from Aberystwyth and The Dyfy forest in Machynlleth.
For walkers, several public footpaths cross our land, providing one of the few close access points to the Rhinog range, one of which leads directly to the famous Roman Steps and the Cambrian Way. We have walking itineraries around Cae Gwyn and Trawsfynydd - please ask for more information if you wish to explore locally.
For fishing enthusiasts, we own the fishing rights of nearly 1 km of Afon Eden so you can enjoy fishing anywhere along the river on the farm at your leisure. You may also want to test your skills of fry-fishing at the lakes in Trawsfynydd or Bala. The Mawddach river/estuary and the sea on the Cardigan Bay also provide popular fishing spots in the area.
